The purity movement. Foe or ally?
When people think sex-negative they often think of purity movement-esque idealogies. Aannnd I think it failed.
The reason I think this is because I think it focused more on forcing rules that could be written off as "it wouldnt hurt anyone blantantly if I broke this rule", rather than explaining the mentality and logic behind it to people. Failure in education. This just led to "rebels" rebeling against the rules bcuz it wuz cool.
Maybe I'm looking at it oversimplified. People aren't that stupid? Actually they are, I am, you are probably.

Theres a community called http://www.thankgodforsex.org/ who are """"Christians"""" who make it a point to show how sex-positive they are. I downloaded some audio files from them and listened to them. It was flipping ridiculous. It was audio of a circle of people coping with PTSD from growing up in a 'strict suppresive puritanical lifestyle'. I could hear them shaking and crying as they recounted stories about porn being blocked and feeling *gasp* shaaammmeee. 'When I grow up im going to make sure I wallpaper muh sons room with reproductive anatomy diagrams so he wont have to live through the terrible life I had oh the ptsd, the ptsd. *whimper*"

But while I thought they were a bit..or a lot, ridiculous, it shows some failings the purity movement had to churn out these wackos. IM SORRY IF THEYRE READING THIS

But there's still crying for this sort of thing today. Theres a branch of feminists that are labeled "sex-negative" because they oppose sexualization of women. And the internet is full of people arguing about censorship. Not censorship as in political viewpoints or scandals, I mean breasts. It hasn't really gone away and I'm not sure if we should really bother with this at all anyway.
Perhaps for anything less than blatantly harmful, censoring something isn't ideal because 1. it doesn't help anything. 2. It may be relying too hard on your judgement of what it is and what it represents, in terms of art.

thx 4 reading my blog. Thread is about the purity movement and related things.

That's what I think too, and that's an obstacle that we're up against too.

I'm familiar with a lot of the "purity movement" rhetoric, which is driven by following very specific rules. I've read many accounts of people who grew up with those kind of teachings, and the ways that they can backfire, which I've mentioned in the second post of this thread: https://iamfortress.forumotion.com/t142-non-asexual-and-dealing-with-unwanted-sexuality

I've dealt with some militant sex-positive people years ago, and they had these kind of upbringings and broke away from them, but went far in the other direction. When someone grows up under one form of extremism, and wants to break away from it, they may go completely in the other direction.

There is a group of feminists who call themselves "sex-negative", because they want to reclaim that term from the people who keep associating it with sexual puritanism just because they're critical of sexuality, how it affects people, and against sexual objectification. They may be labeled "sex-negative" by others as a way to try to write them off, but they may also call themselves that too.
